On Monday, August 23, 2010 NanoRack-2 began drawing power on the ISS, further exanding the opportunities for affordable micro-G research.

Astronaut Shannon Walker, who flew to orbit on June 15 as a member of the Soyuz TMA-19 crew on Expedition 24 and 25, is overseeing install.

Challenged to place, twice in one week, a small satellite into Earth orbit, The Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge is one of the three new Centennial Challenges just announced by NASA.

The goal is to stimulate small satellite launch opportunities.

Pictured on the right is an entrant in the Centennial Glove Challenge. That particular challenge awarded $250k in 2009 to the designer of a better astronaut glove. A list of awards may be found here.

The agency is currently soliciting proposals from non-profit organizations to manage each of the three new competitions.

Having snapped this incredible picture of the asteroid Lutetia, Rosetta will now fall back to slumber for the next four years until a 2014 encounter with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, on which it will attempt a landing.

In the meantime, the craft's science instruments got a work out examining this 100 Km wide asteroid, believed to be composed of metal.

In an article for Astrobiology magazine, Prachi Patel writes that the CubeSat is changing how science gets done, offering an overview of the diminutive craft from its creation by Bob Twiggs, currently a professor in the space sciences program at Morehead State University in Kentucky, to its re-purposing by NanoRacks LLC and Kentucky Space as plug-and-play "CubeLabs" on the International Space Station.

But it's answering the "big questions" in the life sciences where cubes may find their greatest utility. And according to Orlando Santos, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center, the scientific community now grasps the importance of space as a laboratory in which some answers might be found.

Santos says that there is an intense interest in astrobiology and life sciences to gain access to interplanetary conditions above low-Earth orbit. That’s where you can study how living organisms and life-related compounds are affected by the cosmic radiation above the Earth’s protective atmosphere and by reduced gravity. 'That’s how we can study the big questions in astrobiology,' he says. 'What happens when we go to space?

Having launched a broad exomedicine initiative and powered up, just yesterday, the first platform hosting CubeLab experiments on the ISS, Kentucky Space has some thoughts on astrobiology. Inquiries are welcome.

Current plans call for Astronaut Shannon Walker to permanently install the NanoRacks platforms in the Japanese module sometime in the week of July 19 - 23. The first power draws should happen soon thereafter.

The two NanoRacks platforms currently on the space station can each host up to sixteen individual plug-and-play micro-labs called "CubeLabs." Based on the CubeSat form factor, the labs offer repeatable, affordable micro-G research.

Together with its strategic partner, NanoRacks LLC, Kentucky Space can offer regular access to the station.
